Plastic Bag Ban

There was a guy outside of New Seasons on Division gathering signatures to put a ban on plastic bags in Portland. I was the only one that didn’t sign (also the only one without spandex or pants with legs that unzip to become shorts). See, I use those plastic bags for other things. I recycle them. I mainly use them as garbage bags for the trash cans in my house. If there weren’t plastic bags at the grocery store I’d have to buy plastic garbage bags which doesn’t make much sense to me. I bet 75% of the people that signed the no-bag petition use the dog leashes that have the plastic bag holder attached to the end of the leash so they can pick up their pet’s shit, tie it up real tight, and then throw it away. Can’t imagine how many plastic bags full of dog shit there are in landfills all over the country.

Also, is the debate over in regards to which is better: paper of plastic? I vividly remember being asked this question in 9th grade earth science (taking you way back to 1989). The answer, according to Mr. Shooks, was plastic. Don’t remember the details…seemed like it was easier to recycle, cheaper to manufacture, longer lasting. Was Mr. Shooks wrong?
