Burritos Anybody?
The other day at work I got a burrito craving so I asked some coworkers where I should go. The consensus was Cha Cha Cha. I’ve never been but apparently it’s cheap and pretty good. I headed down to NW Glisan and 12th to try it out. I walked in and noticed a group of 5 in front of me along with another guy waiting to place their order. Knowing how slow this town operates I called back to work to see if it’s even worth a try (I only have 30 minutes for lunch). They said go for it. Well, 8 minutes later, nothing had happened. Nobody placed their order. The counter guy was wiping down a few tables. No burrito for me.
The next day I still wanted a burrito. I asked my coworkers if I should try again. They said go for it. As I turned the corner on Glisan I saw a piece of paper taped to the door. Closed for Easter. Wow. No burrito for me.
The following day my girlfriend wanted to go out for lunch. Goddamn did I want a burrito! We went to Por Que No? on Hawthorne for the first time. NO FUCKING BURRITOS. “We don’t serve burritos…we’re a taqueria”. Oh boy.
That brings us to tonight. Guess what? I want a burrito. I’ve been trying to eat one for a fucking week. So we head to La Calaca Comelona on SE Belmont and 23rd. We heard it’s the best. They don’t have burritos. They even go as far as to have a declaration on their menu as to how the “burrito” has been americanized. Thanks for the history lesson you pompous assholes. I’ve never lived in a city that worships tradition so much. Things change for a reason. But, you got me! I’m uncultured! Guess I’ll go to the Lloyd Center and get a Burrito! Maybe I’ll open up a Viking restaurant. All the white people from the midwest that live here will love it.
Only in Portland.
